Learn SEO or pay someone? Learn SEO if you have the time!
When it comes down the search engine optimisation, nothing is guaranteed. There are companies out there that solely work in online marketing claim to be wizards in the dark art of SEO, with many no doubt being serious and honest businesses. You must be aware that there are people out there who posses the same knowledge as you can with some time and effort put in, so you could end up paying through the nose for something you can achieve on your own.
To get straight to the point there are topics that need to be understood when it comes to how a page get ranked. Firstly, the page has to have a theme. Focus on theme and only that per page. Everything from the url, the headings, the titles, the content itself, and the pages it links to should all follow suit.
So we pick our theme or topic as it were. We no have to design our keywords, or key phrases. This is not an opportunity to spam loads of loosely related words but to cleverly synchronise them sparingly into the page. Selected key phrases should not really be used over and over again with no rhythm. What you write must read well for a human as that is our audience, not the search engine bot. We are trying to make our user friendly page simultaneously search engine spider friendly. Do not try to favour one over the other.
Key phrases and a topic sorted. So let us give our url a name! Use dashes (-) between words are search engines will read them as spaces. Make good use of the page url name and make it relevant. Now the oldies, the Meta tags. Now they are not as important as they used to be but still need some attention paid to them. Here we must create a solid Meta title, a specific Meta description and a carefully selected range of Meta keywords.
Now for our information! We wanted to write our content for the intended audience of a human who will want to read it. We create the relevant eye catching headers and write out the body of information. Strategically you want to place the key phrases in free reading text so they do not look out of place. Do not go over board, say 4 or 5 times per 500 words of well written text. Avoid spamming!
Linking internally and from external sources to the page are good ways to improve your page rankings with search engines. Create internal links to other relevant pages on your website, and from those to the page you are creating so they form internal return links. Link text / anchor text again should be relevant to what the pages are about. Having inbound links from external sites linking to the page is a good way to go about improving your page ranking and get some traffic.
These are just simple basics that should be covered by anyone trying to start out with search engine optimisation. Of course there are more advanced techniques out there, so once you have a basic foundation start playing about with more advance methods.
If you have the time, then learn search engine optimisation techniques rather than pay someone to do it. It is an art form that can be learnt by anyone with the willingness and to time to learn.
